Tool Company Sets Up Store in Grand Prairie
With
more than 12,000 products in its inventory, Northern Tool & Equipment Company
is billed as "the ultimate source of tools and equipment." For more
than 20 years, the company has marketed a wide range of tools, power equipment
and accessories to individuals and businesses, including automotive shops, grounds

40 retail stores in ten U.S. states.
The latest addition to their list of retail stores is a newly constructed 25,000 SF building in Grand Prairie, Texas. Construction for this new store began on February 16, 2004, with the Certificate of Occupancy (CO) issued on June 9. Bob Moore Construction was the general contractor for this new building, working with architect JKLA, Inc. out of Mission, Kansas. The property owner is Centdev Properties in Cornelius, North Carolina.
The new store features a large open area with shelving for thousands of products. A loading dock in the rear of the building provides for easy delivery of new product shipments. The building also houses several administrative offices, a maintenance facility and an employee break room. The store is finished in the company's blue and white color scheme, with a large decorative façade at the front. A fenced, outdoor equipment yard houses larger pieces of equipment to the side of the store.
"I'm very impressed with the building," said Brian Graham, Construction Project Manager for Northern Tool & Equipment. "Everything looks excellent, very nice. The front façade really looks great. We've already received several comments on it."

Tool's aggressive growth plan dictated a tight schedule for the project. "The
schedule was very important to us," Graham said. "Curt Hellen (Project
Manager) did an excellent job of working with the subcontractors, coordinating
and organizing everything to work together and get it done on time."
To meet the scheduled CO date, the participants used a variety of time-saving tactics. "This project was an experiment for us," said Robin Broocks, Director of Project Management, Centdev Properties. "Instead of using the normal submittal process, we got everyone together - Northern Tool, the subcontractors, Bob Moore Construction - and over three days had a submittal party with everyone from designers to owners to subcontractors taking part. That worked very well, having everyone together and working through that very quickly.
"This was also the first time we've used tiltwall construction on a Northern Tool project," Broocks added. "I'm happy with how well it worked, and how fast it was. It was amazing how quickly the building went up. I sat in on several progress meetings and was impressed at how Curt managed the process and coordinated with everyone. Everyone at Bob Moore was very professional."
"The schedule was the biggest challenge for this project," said Curt Hellen, Senior Project Manager for Bob Moore Construction. "To deliver the building on time we went from ground breaking to completion in only 99 working days, while encountering 22 lost days due to weather. Our team of subcontractors was superb. Thanks to their efforts, we were able to deliver a quality building on schedule and within budget."
