Dallas / Fort Worth Commercial Construction Jobsites Stand Down for Safety

Commercial General Contractor Bob Moore Construction Company was part of an initiative where major construction projects in Dallas and Fort Worth stopped on Wednesday May 17th, 2006 to participate in the SAFE Stand Down, organized by QUOIN, the local chapter of AGCMay 17, 2006 - ARLINGTON, TEXAS - Major construction projects in Dallas and Fort Worth will stop on Wednesday May 17th, 2006 to participate in the SAFE Stand Down, organized by QUOIN, the local chapter of AGC.

The SAFE stand down will last for 90 minutes. All construction projects will stop production so that workers can receive safety awareness and procedural training. The main focus for this stand down will be electrical safety procedures and requirements.

This stand down is the third of its kind in North Texas. The first took place in May, 2005 after the region experienced 32 jobsite fatalities in 2004 and nine fatalities in the first four months of 2005. A second stand down was held in November, 2005. Approximately 65 general contractors participated in the November stand down, and more than 90 are expected to take part in the upcoming event.

"Up to now our superintendents have provided the training. This time our major subcontractors will take a greater role in coordinating and running the meetings. We're excited to see the subcontractors taking greater ownership of safety awareness."

The training sessions have made a significant impact, according to Dallas Director of OSHA Kathy Delaney. North Texas jobsites have not experienced a fatality incident since August, 2005; OSHA estimates that prior to the training, the region's construction jobsites were on a pace to see a dozen fatalities in that period.

"We still have participated in all three stand downs," said Dino Sideris, Safety Director for Bob Moore Construction. "The whole point of the stand down is to drive greater acceptance of safe working procedures as the normal way of doing business. The proof of the program's success is in the numbers. Zero fatalities since August, 2005 is a remarkable turnaround from where our region was going up to that point. You can contrast what we've accomplished to the Houston market, which has suffered more than a dozen fatalities this year. We're now helping Houston general contractors to implement stand downs in their area and I'm confident we'll see their numbers improve as well.

"Bob Moore Construction has not experienced a reportable incident in over five years," added Sideris, "so we have a long tradition of emphasizing safety in our workplaces. We've led by example on our jobsites and helped implement the stand downs in our area, and I'm very happy that we're now influencing other parts of the state as well. Safety is not a matter of competition. We want to see every jobsite operating safely, whether it's our project or our competition's."
